Lightweight 3-Season Kit

The 10–20 lb sweet spot: durable mainstream gear with comfort to spare, priced live.

The sweet spot for most backpackers: weekend trips to week-long treks, without giving up a freestanding tent or a real sleeping bag.

Mainstream gear from brands with retail support, chosen for weight-to-comfort. A framed pack, an insulated pad you can sleep on, a stove that simmers.

No car-camping luxuries. Add a chair or a bigger pot from the alternates if you want them.

Two ways to build it

Every category has a budget pick and a premium pick. Prices are live from the retailers we track and refresh every few minutes; the kit total is the sum of whatever is cheapest right now in each category. Swap any item using the other options under it.

The cheapest live price in each slot from gear that will actually work. Some of it is heavier and some of it will not last as long, and that is the trade: it gets you out the door now instead of next season.

How we pick

Each category has a short list of gear we would carry ourselves. Within that list the kit picks the lowest live price, so the item in a slot can change from day to day as sales come and go. Weights are the manufacturer's listed weight for the standard size. Base weight is everything you carry except what you wear and consumables: food, water and fuel. The base weight guide has the details.

Clothing is not part of a kit. What you wear is personal and sized, and worn items do not count toward base weight. Trekking poles stay in because many of these shelters pitch with them.

Why these picks

This is the kit we point most people at. Every slot is filled with gear from brands a store will stand behind, sold in real sizes, on a predictable sale schedule: Big Agnes, NEMO and MSR for shelters, a framed pack from Osprey, Gregory or ULA, an insulated pad you can actually sleep on, and a stove that simmers. None of it needs practice.

Because these are mainstream brands, the budget build in this kit is usually a genuine closeout rather than a lesser model. Last year's colour of a good tent at 40% off is the best value we track, and this kit is where it shows up. The sale calendar explains when to expect those; late August and Black Friday are the two moments to watch.
